We're going to finish up this season as usual, but near the end we'll be making a few minor adjustments to prepare for next season.
We'll be using season 4 as a trial run for rankings-based title fights rather than tournaments. If at any point in the season this proves to be problematic, we can convert back to tournaments at any point. But since almost all of the problems that come from our tournament system manifest themselves near the end of a season, ideally we would see a full season to see what the landscape of the season would look like to have something to compare to. But we will see how it goes.
The below table can act as a tentative plan. If it's easier to think of it as "rules" for title fights, to maintain our transparency, we can do that, because I am a fan of clear, transparent rules for these kinds of things.
Some Pros:
- Realistically, when you read between the lines of all this, it's the exact same process as tournaments, but we don't have to have 4 or 8 man tournaments planned and scheduled in advance. Brackets are not established, and "semi-finals" can take place over several events, instead of on same event.
- It allows more room for challenges, and more room for natural rankings progression, rather than strange leap-frogging we see in tournaments.
- It will make calculating the number of fights a fighter (and his team) has in a season much cleaner, so we dont have some fighters with 3 fights and others with 8 (which happens sometimes because of tournament wins).
- If I do a good job with booking, it will reduce the number of times the same 2 fighters fight, or eliminate the whole "They just fought each other 3 events ago" thing that happens with randomized tournaments.
Overall, I think this might make booking a little less fun for me, but I think this will bring about better, more meaningful title fights, as well as much clearer paths for teams to focus on if they have their eyes set on a title run. Like, if you can see where your fighter is, the competition they will have coming up, and a clearer path to the title shot, it should give people much more time to plan accordingly, rather than just seeing you are in a tournament and only having the points in your bank to work with type thing.
I'll be listening to any and all feedback as we go, so once this starts playing out next season, don't be afraid to questions, comments, concerns at that time!
Lastly, in honour of this change, there's a good chance I'll throw people some bonus points to start next season. Just for fun. (And to bribe the 1 or 2 of you who are really pissed off at me right now and likely typing a rage-reply now, even as they read this )

Rank | Title Fight Eligible? | Qualifying factors | Disqualifying factors | Booking |
#1-#5 | Yes | - Ideally, coming off a win | - lost to champ within last 3 fights without 7+ upgrades - currently on 2 or more fight losing streak | - coming off a win, either title fight or higher ranked opponent. - coming off a loss, defend ranking against lower ranked opponent |
#6-10 | Maybe | - 3+ fight win streak, OR - Champ has cleared out the top 5 contenders | - coming off of a loss - lost to champ within last 3 fights without 10+ upgrades | - coming off a win, higher ranked opponent. - coming off a loss, defend ranking against lower ranked opponent - Multi-fight win streaks should be booked against top 5 ranked opponent - multi fight losing streaks should be booked against 11-20 ranked opponent |
#11-#20 | Unlikely | - Champ has defeated everyone ranked 1-10 AND none of those fighters have received 5+ upgrades | - all qualifying factors not met | - coming off a win, higher ranked opponent. - coming off a loss, defend ranking against lower ranked opponent - Multi-fight win streaks should be booked against #5-#10 ranked opponent - multi-fight losing streaks should be booked against unranked opponent |
Unranked | No | - ineligible | - ineligible | - coming off a win, #15-20 ranked opponent. - coming off a loss, unranked opponent - Multi-fight win streaks should be booked against #11-#20 ranked opponent - multi-fight losing streaks should be upgraded, or deleted from existence |
