Inspired by the creative actions of Phoenix FC, and after an in-depth discussion with a respected, neutral third-party member of the site regarding the most appropriate implementation of title rematches, ManMMA management has decided to adopt the following policy moving forward:
First, as we all know, we have not, and do not, allow immediate rematches for title fight losses. The only exception is non-losses, like draws, or no-contests. This policy has existed for over a decade, and we will continue to maintain that precedent for the remainder of this tournament season.
We did not rematch a fight that was stopped when a fighter had "small nose cut", so if we didn't break precedent on that one, there certainly isn't enough cause to break it for a severely swollen eye.
However, beginning next season, with the hiatus of the tournament format, we will introduce a formal appeals process to allow teams a short window to appeal for a rematch in cases of egregiously bad stoppages.
How do we appeal?
The losing fighter posts an appeal (in announcements). If the appeal post gets 6 member "likes", the appeal is approved automatically, and the rematch will be booked as soon as possible.
Without 6 "likes", the appeal is carefully considered by ManMMA management, and rematches are awarded on a case-by-case basis, considering the criteria of things like context, nature of the damage, momentum of the fight, etc. Without tournaments acting as a title fight gate-keeper, there will be less barriers to accepting an immediate rematch than there was with tournaments.
What's appealable?
- Any cut stoppages
- GnP TKOs
- rarely, very close split decisions
What's NOT appealable?
- Flash KOs
- Submissions where the commentators claim the fighter refused to tap, but the ref stopped it anyway
- unanimous decisions
What fights can be rematched?
I guess everything except Grand Prix and Survivor Series fights. These are events I don't want to have lingering around indefinitely. When they are simmed, they are done. Period.
When does the rematch happen?
Probably the next card.
Can I upgrade my guy for his rematch?
No. You are appealing a rematch because you believe the fight was stopped too early. You are claiming the fight should continue. NOT that you should get a second chance to go back to the drawing board and have another shot at the champ.
Is there a limit to rematches I can request?
Use them sparingly. I don't want this to be a stupid time-suck. I'm more likely to dismiss appeals for unranked fights, or lower-ranked fights rather than high ranked fights, etc.
Does a rematch overturn my loss?
No. The result is official as soon as the fight is completed. You lost. If your fighter loses again, keep in mind they are then on a losing streak, and your match-up options will be affected accordingly.
What if my appeal is denied and I don't get 6 "likes"?
Accept your loss and work your way back into the title picture.
Can I appeal a rematch?
No. Only a draw or No-Contest will bring about a trilogy.
Why starting next season and not now?
Mostly, because there are more than just the most recent fight that might be considered appealable. Especially the ManMMA 45 fight, where Max Holloway was beating Dominick Cruz for the belt well into the 9th round, when the fight was called off for a "small nose cut". Fair is fair, and if we didn't rematch that clusterfuck, it would be unfair to start now, at the tail end of a season, when we are switching up formats next season anyway. We also have a vast history of ManMMA fights from this era that ended within 50 seconds that did not get rematched either.
This is bullshit! Can I appeal this decision?
The current status quo is no rematches. So if you are objecting to rematches in general, go nuts (post complaints below). If you are upset because you are not getting a rematch after getting a small nose cut after beating the hell out of a champion for 9 rounds...sorry. Them's the breaks, Rattlesnakes. If you are upset because you are not getting a rematch after getting a severely swollen eye that prevented you from seeing...sorry. Them's the breaks, Rattlesnakes.
I have questions not addressed here.
