In fairness to Austin, this line of conversation is more vague that hard, real, concrete things.
Like, when grilled on whether he would give up his guns if it meant no more school shootings, he obviously said yes. When grilled on whether he would rather have his guns or universal healthcare for his whole country, he said he would.
Like most responsible gun owners, he is (last i talked to him in a meaningful way about it) supportive of meaningful gun reform. The kind that, like a drivers license, allows safe, responsible people to have their guns.
My issue is that it's harder to get and maintain a car license than it is a gun license. I don't have a problem with people wanting or having guns, but the laws need to be cleaner, clearer, and stricter. I don't think people would complain if they had to take a test every couple years to maintain their gun ownership license, for example.
I think its also a good idea to introduce a gun tax - meaning that all sales of guns include a tax, where the funding from such sales/taxes goes towards various survivor programs, health care initiatives, etc.
It's proven that not having gun is safest, but since that is clearly not happening, Americans need to ditch partisan bickering, and get down to the basic things gun owners don't have a problem with. Like, are there really a lot of people like you, Austin, responsible gun owners, arguing that 14 year olds should be allowed to buy guns at a gun show via loopholes? Maybe I am assuming too much, but I don't think so...

It feels gross to have a tax on guns to give money to survivors of gun violence. There is something very unnerving about that to me. Maybe its just the irony of it and makes me feel like gun owners go "it's okay that woman's kid was killed, because we already paid for her loss."

I was thinking more in the same ideological vein as directing taxes collected from cigarette sales going to health care and such, but yeahhhhh.

The execution of it is good, but the principal of the thing is fucked.
